An island that shoots differently
Tasmania sits far enough south that the light arrives at a lower angle for most of the year. It rakes across a landscape rather than falling onto it, which is why Tasmanian images tend to show texture where mainland images show colour. The wet helps too. Rock, moss and myrtle all hold water, and wet surfaces carry light in a way dry ones do not.
The trade is that conditions close in quickly and often. Most of the work here involved waiting.
The three landscapes in this collection
The central highlands. Cradle Mountain Dove Lake, TAS, Twisted Lakes, Cradle Mountain, TAS, Kitchen Hut, Cradle Mountain, TAS, Reflections Wombat Tarn, TAS and Mountain Tarn Walls of Jerusalem, TAS come from the plateau country, where still water and hard rock sit next to each other. Dixons Kingdom Hut, TAS and The Labyrinth, TAS were made further into the Walls of Jerusalem, on foot.
Rainforest and falls. Russell Falls, TAS and Reach for Life Russell Falls, TAS both come from Mount Field, where the tree ferns close the canopy and the light that gets through is already green. These are the pieces that work in a room without much natural light, because they were made in one.
The east coast. Chain of Lagoons, TAS, Peaceful Waters, Coles Bay, TAS, Eddystone Point, TAS, Sunset at Picnic Rocks, TAS and Bird River, TAS carry the granite and orange lichen that the east coast is known for.
What suits which room
The highland and coastal panoramics are cool toned and read as calm rather than dramatic, which makes them straightforward pieces to live with in a bedroom or a consulting room. The rainforest images are darker and denser, and hold a hallway or a stairwell where a wide horizon would be wasted.
