The shape that hangs in sets

A square print is easy to pair. Two side by side, four in a block or a run of six along a hallway all hold together, because there is no competing proportion to reconcile. If you are building a wall rather than hanging a single image, start here.

Building a group

Keep the spacing tight, around 5 to 8 centimetres, so the set reads as one object. Match the frame finish across the whole group and let the images differ. Mixing frame colours breaks the effect that made you choose squares.

Single square prints

On its own a square suits a wall that is roughly as tall as it is wide: between two windows, above a chest of drawers, or in a small room where a panoramic would overwhelm.

What the square does to a landscape

It removes the horizon as the organising line and pushes attention to texture and colour instead. Horse Head Rock, Bermagui, NSW is a good example of country that works better contained than extended.

If you want the long view

The panoramic range is the opposite instinct, and the two do not usually belong on the same wall.
